Philosophy 110: Final Exam

University of Hartford

This is the complete, take-home final exam!!!

DUE DATES for all sections: Saturday, December 21st, 12:00 noon. Late exams will not be accepted. Feel free to turn in your exam before this date if you have completed it.

Return the exam, typed, with each question clearly numbered to my mail box in Auerbach Hall, philosophy dept., 2nd floor.

(Do not place the exam in the box outside the adjunct office. Place it in the mail box slot down the hall where all department faculty members have mail slots).

Please provide essay responses to each of these questions. Your responses should be between 1 ˝ to 2 pages per question typed, doubled spaced.

(1)  Explain two ways in which the distinction between reality and appearances emerges in the Seducer’s Diary.  How do you see your observations as relating to the Allegory of the Cave?

(2)  To what extent do you think that the character Meno (or Socrates) can be considered a seducer?

(3)  Compare Plato and Kierkegaard as philosophical authors.  How are they similar? How do they differ?

(4)  “The unexamined life is not worth living” – Socrates

What does Socrates mean by this statement?  How does it relate to each of the three works we have read during the semester?

* Questions are weighted equally, so each question has the same value in determining the overall grade for the exam.  Exam counts as 20% of final grade.

* Unlike your papers earlier in the course, it is not necessary for your essay responses to develop and respond to objections. Be sure, though, that your answers are adequately developed, clear, concise, and cogent.

Have a safe and enjoyable break.  Your final exams will be available next semester for pick up.
